The fish help to prevent heart diseases with their high Omega 3 content. Studies showing that Alzheimer’s Disease can be combated have also been proven.

First it is time to round up the various ingredients that you will require. You will need 2 ounces of pacific sardines and one ripened avocado. You’ll also require a sprig of parsley, Sherried vinegar, olive oil, and fresh lemon juice. A loaf of bread and pinch of sea salt will be needed too. Keep in mind that the fresher the components are, the more delicious the end result will taste.

A medium sized bowl and several smaller ones will be needed as well. A few wooden spoons and whisks should be cleaned and ready. As well as a basting brush and sharp knives.

The first step is preparing the fresh sardines in the olive oil. If you’re using canned sardines instead, be sure that you drain them completely. Set half of them aside. Mix together the Sherried vinegar, fresh lemon, and parsley in a bowl and add the other half of the pacific sardines. Cover the bowl and set it aside.

With the oven on high, cut the bread roll into slices. Brush one side with the sardine oil concoction and let stand in the oven for a few minutes. Cut the ripe avocado in half and stir up the contents. Remove the toasted bread and spread the side with the olive oil with a layer of avocado. Top with the whole sardines.

Cut large slices of iceberg lettuce and top each with one piece of the toast. A sprig of parsley can be used on each as a garnish. Drizzle any sardine oil that was leftover on top of the toast pieces as well. Finally, add a fresh wedge of lemon to each slice of lettuce and sprinkle a little sea salt over everything evenly.

Sardine Toast is the ideal party food. The sliced bread and lettuce allow it to be consumed with your fingers while making rounds around the party. The snacks can be placed on top of thick paper napkins or decorative snack plates. They’re a delicious snack to include on table of appetizers or they can even be served on a nice tray and passed throughout the room.

Preparing Your Fish Pond For Storms

Written on May 22nd, 2010 by Owen Jonesno shouts

It does not matter where you live, I am sure that you experience storms at some time of the year. In the north of the northern hemisphere, we tend to get lots of rain in winter and spring. In the tropics, there may be monsoons. Whatever you call them, they give off lots of wind and lots of rain in a short space of time – it is basically a storm.

The fact is that, if you know that a storm is approaching, you can take precautions and save your precious fish, whether they are expensive or just dear to you. It might be useful to distinguish between minor and major storms, but that is only helpful if you can trust your meteorologist.

Minor Storms: the first thing to do is to stop feeding your fish, if you have enough notice of the storm. Fish can easily live for weeks on the insects and plant life in the water, so do not be concerned. The reason for stopping feeding is that if the storm damages your filtration system, the quality of the pond water will not deteriorate so much, if there is no uneaten food in it.

Take out some of the water to allow for the rainfall, but do a partial water change too, because otherwise the reduced water level will contain greater levels of toxins until the rain comes.

Remove things from the vicinity that can blow over and fall into your pond. It is a good idea to put a net over the pond to prevent things being blown into it too. Flying twigs or branches could alarm or even spear your fish.

Major Storms: we are not talking about hurricanes here. If a hurricane looks likely to hit, you should evacuate your fish to a temporary tank somewhere safe – maybe a 50 gallon barrel in the basement or somewhere like that.

If you want to be completely certain that your fish will be alright, you could ask your local pet shop to take them away to look after them otherwise proceed as for a minor storm but with the following extra safety measures.

Disconnect all the electrical apparatus in and around your fish pond. Make sure that there is no way that a live wire can fall into the pond and electrocute your fish. Remove all the plants from your pond as they could be damaged by the wind and waves, but leave any stone hiding places that your fish will certainly look for while the storm is blowing. If you think that maybe you do not have enough ‘caves’, build some temporary ones from bricks or blocks.

Put a double layer of netting over your pond and tie it lower down than normal, say only a few inches above the water line, but not so low that if a fish gets out, it cannot get back in. Lastly, build a wall of sand bags at least two feet high all the way around your pond. This will allow the water to get in and drain away, without taking your fish with it, which is why the net must be high enough to permit the fish to get back into the pond.

Imagine The Great White Shark Being Endangered

Written on May 20th, 2010 by Richard Williamsno shouts

Anyone who has seen the blockbuster movie, Jaws will find it difficult to imagine the great white shark as being endangered by anything. However, this shark has simply been over hunted from 1970 until now. This species takes a long time to reach sexual maturity. When overfishing occurs, the reproduction rate drops radically.

New Zealand imposes a $250,000 fine on fishermen who capture one within 200 nautical miles of New Zealand. The same fine applies to boats carrying the New Zealand flag outside the 200 nautical mile (370 kilometres) boundary. In addition, they can be jailed for six months time.

The great white shark by other names is called the white death and the white pointer. Its scientific classification is Carcharodon carcharias. Seen mostly in coastal waters (off all countries). It can reach a length of 20 feet (6 metres) and 4,940 pounds (2,240 kilograms).

The life span is 30 to 100 years. Sexual maturity occurs at approximately fifteen years. Men hate it because it eats (among many other things), seals an sea lions. Porpoises and dolphins are on its menu as well. It does consume fish of all kinds too.

In spite of the image portrayed by the novel and movie, humans are not the first food choice of the great white. However, none among us would try to prove that fact. The great white may be endangered, but endangering seems a more appropriate term.

Coastal waters are its normal habitat. The temperature ranges from 12 to 24 celcius and 54 to 75 degrees Farenheit. More of them are found near South Africa, Australia, California in the US and Mexico. They have been found in waters off the Caribbean islands and Massachusetts in the US.

The underbelly of this shark is white. The dorsal area is grey, sometimes with a brown or blue mottling. Its snout is large an conical in shape. When it bites with its rows of serrated teeth, it shakes its head as it saws off parts of its prey.

Little has been determined about the mating habits of the great white shark. Scientists theorize that they may migrate to an underwater mating ground. Another theory is that gathering around and feeding on a dead whale may arouse mating behavior. Neither has been proven yet.

In his studies of sharks one shark that has always fascinated Richard Williams is the Great White Shark.

Cichlid Aquarium Mistakes

Written on May 19th, 2010 by Carey Malloyno shouts

Learning how to keep tropical fish can be very rewarding but sometimes very troubling. Actually, cichlid care is completely different from the care of most tropical aquarium fish.

More and more new aquarium fish keepers are taking on the hobby of learning how to keep these amazing tropical fish, but many are just unsure of how to take care of these very unique and beautiful aquarium fish.

Cichlid Keeping Mistakes

So what are some of the common mistakes that a lot of novice tropical fish keepers make? One of the most common mistakes that aquarium fish keepers make is the mixing of African and American varieties.

Pet stores make this error as well! It makes me sad to see these beautiful aquarium fish in pet stores that are improperly kept. Both the Africans and American species kept in the same aquarium are miserable and literally are barely even alive. Their water quality requirements are very different and they just are not intended to be living together in nature.

What are some more mistakes that fish keepers make?

This is one of the most common errors that even the most experienced aquarist makes. Not making routine water change outs in their aquariums. Regardless of what variety of tropical fish that you have, routine water changes are literally the life of all tropical aquarium fish. Yes, it’s simple and easy, but a very common mistake.

The fact is, beginner fish keepers just don’t know how to take care of their tropical aquarium fish much less make them flourish and even begin to pair off and reproduce. PH and salinity requirements are also very important in the typical home aquarium. Take cichlid fish as an example. African and American species have very different water chemistry requirements.

So where can you find out how to avoid making more mistakes when learning how to keep these very unique tropical fish? You need to find a good aquarium fish care guide to make sure that your cichlids stay healthy and happy for years to come.

Your Backyard Pond

Written on May 19th, 2010 by Owen Jonesno shouts

If you have a backyard or back garden, you can have a fish pond. They are not costly to build and if you make it yourself it is clearly even cheaper. You can make your own pond pretty easily, you just have to bear a few things in mind when you plan where you are going to situate it and how big it will be.

A backyard fish pond is fantastic for all kinds of households. Tending a backyard fish pond is not difficult and the mild exercise can be good for you. it is also therapeutic to watch the fish and other pond life going about their routine business and children will learn a bit more about nature,

It is important to plan your pond before you take up your spade and the first thing to think about is where you are going to put it. Try not to locate it under a tree or you will be pulling leaves out of your pond every day in autumn. Do not put the pond at the lowest point in your backyard or it may overflow when it rains and your fish may swim away which means that you will need to sandbag it before it rains every time..

The midday sun can be very hot, so it would help if the pond had at least partial shade between 11 AM and 2 PM. If your region is subject to freezing then the pond should be 30-45 inches deep for at least 4 m2 or 36 ft2, although if the winter can get really bad, it is best to get advice from a neighbourhood pet shop. Have a look at the pre-formed fish ponds in a garden or pond centre to see if you like those shapes and sizes. If you do not, then you can procure a butyl pond liner (a sheet of rubber) and design your own pond.

After you have dug out your backyard fish pond and put your pre-formed or butyl liner into the hole, you should finish off the pond’s edge with either brick, block or stone. Use similar materials to build a few caves in the pond itself for the fish to take cover in. You could also anchor the fountain and any under-water lighting. Fill the pond with water, but do not place any living thing into it yet. Put the rest of your equipment in.

You will need a general purpose pump to send water to the pond filter, which should be two or three feet above the water level. The water will then have to pass through a filter to remove plant debris and faeces and under a UV light to kill bacteria. It can return to the pond via a waterfall, which will help aerate the water as will the fountain.

After a week, the water will have lost the chemicals like chlorine which the water company puts into it and you can buy plants and fish, but do not rush into it. You may want to build a few shelves to put flower pots on for the aquatic plants that have need of them.

Tips For Setting Up A Backyard Fish Pond

Written on May 18th, 2010 by Owen Jonesno shouts

Do you have a garden pond? Or would you like one? A garden pond or a water garden does not have to be large to completely change how you use your garden. The sound of running water is so relaxing and a pond fountain or a waterfall can have a cooling effect on a hot summer’s day. Watching the fish carry out their daily lives is relaxing too and many gardeners like the chance to branch out into the new kingdom of aquatic plants.

If your pond is sunk into the earth, your could watch it from above or you could build it above ground and utilize perspex windows to watch your fish on their own level. Your fish will reproduce too, so you will have a new, complete, ecosystem in your own backyard.

Select the site of your pond with care. Try to position it on slightly higher ground, so that it is not flooded with all your garden’s rainwater in the course of heavy rains. Beware of putting your pond under a tree or you will always be raking leaves out of the water, which is a real pain. Siting your pond in a location where it is in at least partial shade when the sun is high will also help reduce on algae growth.

However, once the contractor has created your pond and you have stocked it, is the time when your work begins. Perhaps not work, possibly you will take pleasure in maintaining your fish and your fish pond. This is not hard and a largish pond will need hardly any maintenance at all, most of it can be mechanized.

One of the first things that you will have to try to do is stop your garden falling into the pond. You do not want surrounding mud slipping into the pond and literally muddying the water. This can be accomplished by lining your pond with a butyl pond liner and bringing the liner up over the lip of the pond by a foot or two.

Then you need to hold that in place. This can be done to suit your taste, but most people put a stone or brick walkway around the pond. If you let this overhang the pond by an inch or two, you will very nearly totally hide the pond liner.

The majority of people overfeed their fish, because fish outdoor will find a lot of natural food such as flies, larvae and grubs. This surplus food turns into a surplus of nutrients. This super-charged water is a perfect milieu for algae, and algae is going to be your undying adversary. However, you can soak up some of these surplus nutrients with other plants that you like.

Aquatic plants such as lilies really make a pond and they will help aerate the water during the day when the water may be warmer (warm water contains less oxygen than cool water). Plants also give your fish somewhere to hide from predators and strong sunlight, which will diminish stress on your fish as well.

You Can Set Up A New Aquarium And Stop New Tank Syndrome Before It Develops

Written on May 18th, 2010 by Leonard Boylerno shouts

Research has shown that watching fish swim in an aquarium reduces stress and blood pressure. Beginning a brand new aquarium requires some understanding of the process. If done without any understanding, many fish put into a new fish tank may die of new tank syndrome. This article will show you exactly how to start a new aquarium and reduce the frustration of new tank syndrome.

The first step is deciding on the size tank you would like to purchase. There are tanks with capacities of just a few gallons to tanks with over 50 gallons. When you purchase your tank, be sure to also buy a sturdy stand. You can figure the weight of a filled tank by multiplying the total tank gallons by 10. If your tank holds 40 gallons of water, it would weigh 400 pounds filled.

In addition to purchasing a fish tank, you will also need a hood, heater, water conditioner, gravel and gravel siphon, as well as pH, ammonia and nitrite test kits and some aquarium decorations. Plan on buying between a pound and a pound-and-a-half of gravel per gallon of water. Do not buy the fish at this time. The use of an EcoBio-Stone will help shorten new tank syndrome, but it needs time to establish the colonies of beneficial bacteria

If you have an EcoBio-Stone, the first thing you must do after purchasing your aquarium supplies is to put it in chlorine-free water, allowing it to soak for 24 hours. Next, rinse the tank and gravel very well with plain water. Never use any type of soap or detergent. Once this is complete, set the filter and heater up.

Now add the gravel, decorations and attach the air pump to any decorations that require it. Follow this with water. Make sure you add a water conditioner to remove any harmful chemicals, such as chlorine, from the water. A water conditioner will keep the pH level at 7.0, which is what most fish thrive in. Set the heater to a level that will keep the water between 76-78 degrees Fahrenheit. After soaking the stone, add it to your tank. Now it is time to cycle your aquarium.

To avoid new tank syndrome, you must cycle your aquarium. Cycling your aquarium refers to the process of letting the aquarium build up enough good bacteria to support fish. On its own it takes about 35 days to build up enough good bacteria to keep ammonia and nitrite levels in check. Using EcoBio-Stone, your tank will have colonies of good bacteria built quite quickly. One block lasts about two years and will keep your tank water clear and bacteria levels at the correct amount.

Now is the time to buy just two or three fish. Before releasing the fish into the aquarium, set the plastic bag you carried them home in into the tank. This allows the fish to adjust to the water temperature. Wait 10 minutes. Gently release the fish and throw the water in the bag away as it will have fish waste in it.

Your new aquarium requires weekly and monthly maintenance in order to keep it sparkling clean. Each week be sure to check the pH level. Ammonia and nitrite levels should also be checked. A healthy tank has zero levels of ammonia and nitrites. Each month, refresh 20% of the water and add water conditioner to remove harmful chlorine and other chemicals. At this time, you should also siphon debris from the gravel and clean the filter. After cleaning the filter, add fresh activated charcoal. Knowing how to start a new aquarium will keep your fish happy, and healthy for you to enjoy.

An EcoBio-Stone is a must when you prepare to start a new aquarium. It helps to provide attractive and clean equipment and healthy home for the inhabitants.

Beginner Tropical Fish Care

Written on May 15th, 2010 by Sverre Philipsno shouts

Tropical pet fish is a hobby shared by many fish enthusiast out there, and if you’re looking to join the community, be sure to understand that being a pet owner will means you need to be responsible for your pet fish’s well being and health. Providing them with an environment where they can survive and be healthy is a big part of it, therefore understanding some aspect of it will no doubt help you with raring a pet fish. Here are some things you should know about before getting one.

The Fish Tank

The first thing you should get ready for is your fish’s home, which is the fish tank. If you can, always choose to have the bigger tank instead of the smaller one because firstly you allow your fishes to have more room to roam around, not to mention that with a bigger tank, the temperature will be harder to alter therefore making it easier for you to regulate. Should you want more fishes in the tank later on will also be easier if you have a bigger aquarium as compared to a smaller one.

When decorating your fish tank, be sure to specifically prepare a few hiding spots for your fish, this is because animals in general get stressed out easily and giving them a place to hide can help them cope with stresses easier. This is especially important if your placement of your fish tank is under direct sunlight, as we all know direct sunlight is not good for anyone’s health, so are your fishes.

Your Fish Breed

One mistake that many new owner commit is that they tend to place a lot of different kind of breed within the same aquarium all at once. This is not good for any of your pet fish as they need time to to suit themselves in a new environment, by adding a lot of other fishes you stress them out and this can sometimes lead to their death. Therefore start with a small collection before adding more different fishes in.

Feeding is one of the most important aspect when raring tropical fishes, as you do not want to overfeed them because it can cause quite a mess in your air filter and water, therefore check and see if there are any flakes at the bottom of your fish tank, if there is then you are overfeeding them. Make sure that you’re providing them additional nutritional food on top of their normal fish food to keep them strong and healthy!

Finally, make sure that you do clean their tank twice every month, this way you can keep it clean enough for them to live in and at the same time enjoy the beautiful view of your aquarium!
