Taking Care Of An Aging Pet’s Health

Written on May 19th, 2010 by Josh Donovanno shouts

All pets inevitably slow down as they get older, but with the right preventative care, you can help them make the most of their twilight years. Be sure to take your senior pet to the veterinarian annually or more often, according to its needs.

Just like people, pets have to watch their weight to feel good and to look good. An overweight pet usually is susceptible to more health problems including, joint pain, arthritis, kidney malfunctions and diabetes.

Reduce the amount of special treats you feed your pets. Pets love their treats and may be hard to resist, but every extra treat brings along extra calories they will have to burn off to be at a healthy weight. So, when they are begging for kibble keep in mind their health is at stake.

It’s best to feed your pet once a day or in smaller amounts a few times a day. Don’t forget to remove any food left in the bowl after they have finished eating. Explain to your children that sneaking food to the family pet can have negative consequences.

It’s important to provide a stead supply of fresh, cool water for your pet. Sometimes older dogs have trouble reaching the bowl. Use an elevated dish and place it in a central location so your pet has easy access to it.

Exercise is crucial for your pets at any age. Short daily walks are recommended for older pets to keep their circulation in good condition. Dogs enjoy getting fresh air and the stimulation of daily walks.

As your pet ages you may find they can no longer digest dry food or it may be too hard on its teeth. When that happens, switch to moist or canned dog food.

To take the best care of your aging pet, take the time for regular veterinary care. A checkup will help your pet to live a long and happy life.

Take A Trip To The Local Zoo And See These Amazing Animals

Written on May 19th, 2010 by Duane Groseno shouts

Ever since I can remember, I’ve loved going to the zoo. Growing up in San Diego, I was really able to gain an appreciation for the wide range of species in the world by visiting the local zoos. Many of my childhood weekends were spent at the city zoo, observing the animals and studying their different behaviors.

Even as an adult, I’m a big animal lover and I still find zoos both educational and extremely entertaining. Here are a few of my favorite animals, many of which can probably be found in your local zoo.

Dolphins always make for an entertaining show. They’re fun to watch, and they’re very intelligent and friendly. Dolphins are mammals, even though it doesn’t seem like they would be. They love attention from humans and they’re always receptive to playing.

Monkeys, gorillas, and chimpanzees are probably some of my favorite animals to watch. I love studying them because they’re the closest thing to human beings in the zoo, or on the planet, for that matter.

You could watch these animals for hours, and their expressions and mannerisms will have you laughing out loud. They’re sure to keep you entertained with their funny behaviors; I know I can’t help but smile when I’m watching them.

The elephant is the last animal I’ll bring up. I’ve loved elephants since I was a kid for the fact that they’re quite intelligent and loving despite their tremendous size.

Find out if your local zoo offers an elephant exhibit, and make sure to visit the exhibit if it’s there. To me, elephants are one of the most interesting creatures to watch in the zoo. I could sit there and study their behaviors all day.

Whenever you find yourself at the zoo, look out for these exhibits. You’ll definitely be entertained, and you might even be surprised by the intelligence of some of these animals.

My First Night In Pattaya, Thailand

Written on May 18th, 2010 by Owen Jonesno shouts

It was seven-ish and I was sitting in a pleasant-enough room overlooking the front entrance to the pub above which I had just moved in. The pub was the Pig and Whistle on Soi 7 in Pattaya. Across the way was a large hole, which they were hoping to construct a hotel in and next door to that, right opposite me, was a small bar with one lady sitting on a stool outside it. Not that there was a wall there, it was open on two sides. The Soi was nice and quiet, I thought. I also thought that I might go and sit in that little bar and talk to that woman, if my friend was late, because I would definitely see him arrive from two metres away, the width of the Soi.

So, I went to the bar in the pub at 19:15 to await my friend who said he would arrive at 20:00. It was much busier than thirty minutes earlier but not noisy and I sat at the bar. The first thing a barmaid did was say hello, give me a menu and step back. I did not really want to eat, I only wanted a beer as I assumed we would be eating together later, but I wanted to read the menu anyway.

‘A pint of Boddington’s’, I said. It arrived and the girl began laying a place for me. I tried to say that I was not hungry, but it was no good. Like in Spain, most people eat and drink at the same time. All the while the girl was smiling at me. Then she said: ‘You live upstairs? My name Charli. What you want to eat?’. So, I gave in and ordered something and rice.

‘You first time in Thailand? You no can eat. Too spicy’, she said with a grin. ‘Oh’, I replied, ‘but I want to try. ‘I put only 50-50 for you’, she declared and was gone.

I battled my way through that meal and it took a Boddingtons and a bottle of water. Charli had been accurate, it was too hot for first-time foreigners and she had reduced the chilis by 50%. I have always heeded a Thai’s guidance on food ever since.

I changed seat to by the window to see what was going on as it was dark by 19:30 and I was curious. Within thirty minutes Soi 7 had transformed itself completely. I could see hundreds of ladies and tourists walking about. I wanted to go out and join in or at least sit in the quiet bar across the lane, but I’m ashamed to say that I was too frightened, so I sat put, rivetted to the Pig like a rabbit in a hunter’s flashlight.

My friend walked in on time and after we had been talking for an hour, he said: ‘Drink up, I have someone I want you to meet’. This was it, we were going into that mele. A waitress opened the door for us and the racket and the heat were tremendous. Particularly the din. Every metre at least two or three girls would shout: ‘Hello, sexy man, you want a drink’. Trying to say no courteously to each invitation was out of the question, so I just stuck close to my pal.

Luckily, we only had about fifty metres to stroll and we sat down in another bar. My friend said hello to several ladies and then said, this a girl I have been going out with for some time. I was astounded as I had never heard him talk about her, ever. She was gorgeous, but could not speak English, so I sat in the din in silence. Not for long through, as my friend said, I have a blind date for you and he introduced another girl to me who was equally beautiful, but with whom I could speak a little. She was captivating and I was captivated. The pandemonium seemed to pass away, but it was only because I was concentrating on my new friend. The four of us had the best time and the best food I had ever had in my forty-nine years of existence.

Home Tinseltown Movie Theater

Written on May 17th, 2010 by Owen Jonesno shouts

Almost everyone would agree that the cinema or movie theater is a fantastic environment to watch films and get away from it all, so magical is a Tinseltown movie theater.

Without doubt, the explanation for this is because you can see the film on a extra-wide screen with quadraphonic sound that can easily make you lose yourself in the movie’s plot.

The high quality of the Tinseltown visuals and the fantastic sound system are surely the most entertaining part of the movie theater-going experience. It definitely is not being present in the cinema house itself! They are frequently full of shops trying to get your money before you take your seat and full of foul-mouthed youths after you’ve sat down!

However, what if you could bring this high-tech system home with you? And what if it worked out cheaper too? Surely, this would surely be something you would enjoy more. Just imagine it for a minute: a real Tinseltown Movie Theater at home – in your home!

Before a few years ago, only a small number of American families had bought a Tinseltown movie theater to be used in their own dwellings. In recent years, however, a high number of American people are showing a trend to be less interested in going out to watch Tinseltown movies at the cinema.

Without doubt, this is due to the development of the Tinseltown movie theater entertainment system.

A starter home movie theater is quite easy to set up. All you need is a TV with a screen that is larger than 27 inches, a DVD player and three ordinary speakers. And there you have the basic components of a Tinseltown movie theater. This could be all you need to give you the level of home movie entertainment that suits you.

But, I am certain that you would want the real feeling of being in a full-sized Tinseltown movie theater, but without the distractions or possibly it is you, who would like to sing along, shout out loud or otherwise get involved in the film, but does not like to annoy the other viewers. Its possible, you know, :-)

In any case, the reason why I am saying this is because there are other pieces of equipment that you might add in order to complete the home Tinseltown movie theater experience. A few additions, over time, say, that would ensure an authentic Tinseltown movie theater experience right in your very own living room.

For instance, you could supplement the already mentioned three basic components by putting in specialist home movie entertainment couches a cool drinks cabinet; a table for snacks; dimable lighting on remote; air conditioning or fans; an usherette with a torch – OK, maybe that’s going a bit too far But, everything is dependent on your budget you set for your home Tinseltown movie theater. The size of the room is another consideration which determines how posh your home Tinseltown movie theater can be.

A good recommendation from home theater enthusiasts is that you need to find the correct sized television set for your Tinseltown home movie theater. The proper size does not necessarily mean the largest you can afford. The proper size television is dependent on the room in your house where you are going to establish the home movie theater. Big is not always good for your home movie entertainment system. It is, nevertheless, to be advised that the television screen should not be smaller than 27 inches, because the picture on a smaller television could be disappointing for a Tinseltown home movie theater. A reliable principle is that the chairs should be somewhere around 5-8 times the size of the television screen away for normal vision.

Another recommendation is that you find speakers that will give you hi-fi surround sound from a high quality brand of speakers. Furthermore, you need to be certain that if the speakers you bought do not produce enough surround sound, then you can to return them. There are speakers that sound great in the shop but when you put them in a room, they sound awful. If the shop allows returns, then that is all is well.

In addition, you may need to choose a DVD player. Once again, quality is important. It is believed by many home theater boffins that all DVD players produde a clear and crisp picture. Although some DVD players guarantee a flicker-free picture, almost all DVD players provide this feature, so I should not be overly swayed by this ‘non’ assertion.

So, size is important, in this case. Knowing how big the room is where you will set up your home Tinseltown movie theater, will be the deciding factor of how big the television needs to be. The size of the room is also the basis for considering the number of speakers. If the room is of a size, you may have need of more than the basic three speakers. Adding a subwoofer can help too, to achieve a good surround sound if your home Tinseltown movie theater is situated in a larger room again.

All of these factors will afford you such a home Tinseltown movie theater experience as, a few years ago, only a few could have. A professional home movie theater designer could be a big help in helping you achieve the best home Tinseltown movie theater installation to give you the best possible home movie theater experience right there in your very own living room.

Golfing for Beginners: Part 3

Written on May 17th, 2010 by Owen Jonesno shouts

The expression the ‘long game’ refers to your drives (shots off the tee) and fairway shots; everything short of the shots you make to get onto the green.

Since each golf hole has a different difficulty level, different par and distinctive hazards, telling you to use your driver on every tee would blatantly be quite wrong.

But don’t worry about it. This is something that you will have to learn with experience as you learn the various types shot you need to make, which will vary according to the club, the placement of the ball and your own personal style of swing.

As a rule of thumb, the lower the number of the club, the longer and lower your ball will travel through the air. For example, a 4-iron will make the ball travel on a long and low trajectory and will most likely roll when it hits the ground, whereas a 9-iron will give the ball much more loft and it will go less distance both in the air and over the ground.

The professionals on TV make it look so easy, don’t they? They hit the ball long and straight time after time after time and never miss-hit the ball causing it trickle six or seven feet or completely miss the ball altogether.

A very important part of the game is driving and if you spend many hours at the driving range you will see a big improvement in your distance shots. You should keep using the same club in the experiment to see what works for you if you move the ball forward or backward in your stance. And take a lesson or two from a pro, if possible to learn the proper swing from the beginning.

Mastering the long game will help you get to the green in fewer strokes, keeping your score and frustration levels down. Remember that it takes a long time to learn consistency and also remember that you’re supposed to be having fun! So go and enjoy yourself.

Home Theater Luxury Seats

Written on May 17th, 2010 by Owen Jonesno shouts

Many people like to relax after a hard day at work by going to the movie theater. However, if you go directly from work, you are likely to get trapped in a traffic jam and you will not have had the chance to freshen up. However, if you go home first to have a shower and get changed, sometimes you can not be bothered to go out again. That is how it works with me in any case.

So, would it not be lovely to be able to reproduce that authentic movie going experience in your own home? Not only can getting to the cinema be a nuisance, you can be hassled once you get there too. People talking through the film or giggling right behind you, someone with his feet up on the back of the seat next to you, cell phones ringing, babies crying… It is enough to put you off. And it is not even as if it is a cheap event anymore.

If you fall into this category, home theater was made for you. It is not essential to have a spare room in which to set up your home theater, you could just as easily use the living room. The size of the screen is important, but that is a function of the size of your room or, more accurately put, a function of how far away from the screen you will sit.

If you need a very large screen, you could go for a projector, although for most people a 36 – 60 inch screen should be adequate. Then speakers. You must have surround sound or you will miss out on a lot of the realism of a true movie theater experience. Again, the number of speakers depends on the size of the room. A 5.1 configuration will do for most rooms. That means quadraphonic sound, plus one extra speaker under the screen and a sub-woofer.

If you like to play games, then you could substitute the standard DVD player with an Xbox for a truly awesome experience. Those are the basics of a medium to excellent home theater with possible games functionality, but there are other things you can do as well.

A set of heavy curtains is a good idea. They will not only stop light coming in, but the will muffle sound getting out Seating is a necessity and I would add a few occasional tables too for drinks and snacks. If the room is not near the kitchen, a small fridge would be handy as well.

The seating arrangements are important too. Some people just put a few couches in the room and that works well enough. Others rather a few armchairs. If it is to be used mainly by kids, half a dozen bean bags is all they need to have fun. However, if you or you and your spouse want to make the experience really something else, why not get a couple of recliners or even better still electric massage chairs? You could be sitting there watching a film with a drink and some snacks on a near-by table while having all your problems and stress from work being soothingly massaged away.

Home Theater Installation And First Rate Speakers

Written on May 17th, 2010 by Owen Jonesno shouts

Home theaters are very popular in the West now for many reasons, but partly due to the recession. However, I forecast that after the downturn is over, home theaters will take off like a rocket. In my estimation, this is because, the recession has forced people to examine their spending, which usually means cutting back. Going out, eating out and movies are all in the front line of these cuts. However, the slump is upsetting and people have to get some pleasure from somewhere.

In the medium to long term, it is cheaper to build a home theater for a family than take them to a proper movie theater every week. Taking a family of four to the movies costs $50-$100, whereas a modest home theater might cost $1,000. It does not take long to recoup those costs. And it saves you the bother of travelling there and back, the noise and mobile phones during the film and high prices for candy and snacks.

OK, maybe people at the moment are buying cheap packages of home theaters, but one of the first things they will change when they get a bit of money again will be the speakers, I bet. Obviously, you need a good quality, large screen, but after that, it is the sound and the bulwark to good sound is normally poor speakers.

The most important consideration in the design of your home theater is the dimensions of your room. If the room is small, you will not require so many speakers. Perhaps three speakers will be enough, if the room is small. However, if you only need three speakers and a sub-woofer, get good ones.

If you have a bigger room however, the basic three home theater speakers may not be enough. You may need to put up to six speakers and a sub-woofer around the room. The position of these speakers is up to you and can depend on the shape or and size of the room anyway, but typical layouts are:

3.1 system: one speaker to the left of the screen, one to the right and one below it. You can put the sub-woofer on top of the central speaker or at the back of the room. Try it and see.

5.1 system: as 3.1, but with two speakers at the back of the room too.

6.1 system: as 5.1, but with another speaker between the rear speakers, as in the front.

7.1 system: as 6.1, but with two speakers central rear, slightly away from each other. You can move the existing rear speakers a little to the sides too.

This set-up requires a lot of wires as you can envisage. Now, you could staple the wires to the skirting board, but you should only do that after you are dead sure that you have the speakers in the right positions. Or you could hang the speakers on the walls. However, although that sounds good for music, it does not always sound all right for a movie.

The best choice is wireless speakers. Wireless speakers can be moved around to suit the number of people watching the movie or moved out for cleaning or redecorating purposes. You do not want to bash your nice, new, expensive speakers with the vacuum cleaner, do you?

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on many topics, but is currently involved with wireless home theater systems. If you are interested in a Home Movie Theatre, please click through to our site now.

How to Build a Custom Home Theater System

Written on May 16th, 2010 by Owen Jonesno shouts

Watching movies is a great way to escape from the stressful life we all lead these days. Watching movies on a wide screen with surround sound can transport you away from that stress into the plot of the movie you are watching. You live the plot it as if you were really there in the movie itself.

Until recently, we could only experience this escapism in a cinema. However, modern technology is able to provide the same visual and sound experience right in your own living room. We will discuss the basic components of a home theater system in this article. Read on to understand how these basic components can deliver the best cinematic experience in a custom home theater system.

Home theater enthusiasts state that the most important factor in setting up a custom home theater system is the size of the location where you will install your custom home theater system. The most important factor in the home theater system – the television – is dependent on the size of the room, although the contention is that a 27 inch television screen is the minimum necessary for your home theater installation.

It is also a recommendation that a flat screen television be used for a home theater system because it shows minimum glare and creates a crisper image. Another major component in any custom home theater system also dependent on the size of the room, is the speaker system.

The number of speakers for your custom home theater system depends on the size of the location. You should have at least three loudspeakers to create a decent surround sound, but you may need up to six loudspeakers, if you want a more realistic sound. The addition of a subwoofer may also be a good way to achieve a complete surround sound like in the movie theaters. Three speakers should be considered the bare minimum, but you may need go up to six if the room is large.

Another major piece of equipment for your custom home theater system is the digital DVD player. It is said that DVD players with a progressive scan are the best choice. This is because the progressive scan creates sharp, flicker-free pictures. However, this points back to the choice of television unit; you may need to check if your flat-screen television set supports progressive scan signals. You may also want to buy a five-disk carrousel DVD player. This will stop you having to get up from your chair to change discs quite so often.

A minor consideration is the power of the DVD player as that will decide how loud your speakers can be played. Of course, almost all this depends on the size of the room in which the custom home theater system is going to be installed. Small rooms only require a few pieces of equipment, bigger rooms may call for more and adding some proprietary home theater furniture to your home theater system will make a huge difference. A bigger room therefore needs a larger investment. A smaller room might require less, but nevertheless high quality, equipment to prevent your home theater set-up under-performing and feeling ‘cheap’.

Finally, you may consider hiring a home theater expert in order to create a beautifully designed home theater system. If you can afford it, this is the best, because the home theater expert will be able to effectively design and set up your home theater system.

That custom home theater designer may also recommend the installation of some additional features like a specialized home theater seating structure and even other home theater furniture, such as small tables for snacks and drinks in order to make your custom home theater system more complete and thereby make it more closely resemble a real movie theater. Having the finest and highest-quality custom home theater system you can afford, will give you a most enviable set up, one that you can really be proud of and one that will enable you to enjoy your movies to the fullest.

Remote Control Models – The Helicopter

Written on May 14th, 2010 by Rhys Jonesno shouts

If you like remote controlled models and have lots of space, then you may want to think about purchasing one of the new big remote control helicopters that have recently been introduced by several makes. These helicopters, which can sometimes be as big as ten feet long, rival genuine helicopters in agility. They are expensive and can cost three thousand dollars or more.

As with many trends, some people just have to have one of their own. So, the next time you are walking in the countryside and you see a helicopter flying in the region, look again closely. At first you will probably think that it is a real helicopter that is simply further away then you first thought. But look again and you will almost certainly see someone controlling the helicopter with a gigantic remote control unit.

If you see one of these remote controlled helicopters in flight, deem yourself very fortunate. Because it is so expensive to own one of these beautiful models, they are also still pretty rare. However, because I am an ardent collector myself, I have considered buying one of these big remote control helicopters, and I even put a bid on one in Ebay once, but in the end I did not get it and instead decided to wait until the price comes down a bit more.

Just as with any new, trendy item, big remote control helicopters are the latest fad, but in a few years, I am sure there will be a better supply and the price will drop. Then I will be ready and waiting to buy. But until then, I have a very bighearted and rich friend who owns one, and I will rehearse flying his. I have already taken it out once – it is so much more powerful than the typical, small remote control helicopters that you are most likely used to. When you first turn it on, the big remote control helicopter?s blades spin with such ferocity, that you may worry that you are going to break something. and then, when it lifts off the ground, you will experience a huge sense of accomplishment, knowing that you are the one who is controlling it.

And if you are able to make a successful, smooth landing as well, then you can truly consider yourself a helicopter pilot, because even those very experienced with small remote control helicopters will be impressed to see someone land a big remote control helicopter, because it really is totally different. So if you happen to be fortunate, rich, or just determined enough to purchase one of your own, enjoy your time with your giant helicopter.

I assure you that it will be one of the most exciting experiences of your life. For me, the entire process was unreal, and when it was all over, I had to phone everyone I knew and tell them how I had flown a 10 foot helicopter and landed it smoothly. I bet that?s how pilots feel the first time they fly a real aircraft.
